Denne artikel diskuterer de politiske idéer, som lå til grund for den radikale strøm- ning i Den Franske Revolution. Gennem kontekstualiserede læsninger af Elysée Loustallot, François Robert og Jean Varlet viser jeg, hvorledes franske revolutionære gradvist udviklede en teori om semi-direkte demokrati. Denne teori blev udviklet på baggrund af konkrete erfaringer i Paris’ lokalforsamlinger, klubber og borgermi- lits, men trak også på idéer – dog ikke ukritisk – fra tænkere som eksempelvis Jean- Jacques Rousseau. Fokus var på (...) at udvikle en teori og praksis om folkesuverænitet, hvori almindelige mennesker ville have den størst mulige grad af indflydelse og kontrol. Den lovgivende magt skulle udøves i netværk af lokalforsamlinger, politiet skulle være en demokratisk kontrolleret borgermilits, og Frankrig skulle regeres gennem imperativmandater, der ville tillade lokale forsamlinger at kontrollere den nationale regering. Som jeg viser, var denne radikale republikanisme ikke modstan- der af repræsentation, men i modsætning til et liberalt begreb om parlamentarisk repræsentation gennem nationale valg var fokus her på semi-direkte demokratiske modeller, der sikrede folkets aktive deltagelse. Un temps, Michel Foucault a été lu comme un archéologue du savoir et un homme d'archives, abandonnant par instants sa réserve pour répondre à l'urgence des luttes. La lecture des cours au Collège de France suggère pourtant que sa politique ne peut être réduite au désordre des circonstances. Elle appartient de plein droit à l'histoire de la vérité quand elle rencontre celle du gouvernement de soi-même et des autres. Comment sommes-nous gouvernés? Quel est en nous le ressort caché de la (...) servitude? Pouvons-nous être gouvernés et nous gouverner autrement? Rechercher et dire la vérité peut-il nous altérer et, avec nous, le monde auquel nous appartenons? Pour répondre à ces questions, Foucault se déplace de l'époque moderne à l'Antiquité et privilégie tour à tour les rapports de pouvoir disséminés dans toute la société, les stratégies politiques qui les organisent et le travail éthique qui permet l'" inservitude " volontaire. Dans une perspective écologiste de relocalisation de l’économie, revenu garanti, coopératives municipales et monnaies locales se révèlent ainsi indissociables pour construire (...) un nouveau système de production, sur d’autres rapports sociaux que le salariat, à l’ère du travail immatériel et de la globalisation marchande. Such is the paradoxical question that lies at the heart of Jean-Luc Nancy’s highly original and now-classic study of the role of language in the critical philosophy of Kant. While Kant did not turn his attention very often to the philosophy of language, Nancy demonstrates to what extent he was anything but oblivious to it. He shows, in fact, that (...) the question of philosophical style, of how to write critical philosophy, goes to the core of Kant’s attempt to articulate the limits, once and for all, that would establish human reason in its autonomy and freedom. He also shows how this properly philosophical program, the very pinnacle of the Enlightenment, leads Kant to posit literature as its other by way of what is here called the syncope, and how this other of philosophy, entirely its product, cannot be said to exist outside of metaphysics in its accomplishment. This subtle, unprecedented reading of Kant demonstrates the continued importance of reflection on the relation between philosophy and literature, indeed, why any commitment to Enlightenment must consider and confront this partition anew. Dans cet article, on se propose d’étudier la reprise du thème cusain de la docte ignorance par Montaigne et par Pascal à la lumière du savoir mathématique et cosmologique de leur époque. Face à la multiplicité des découvertes de son temps, Montaigne se moque de la prétention à la certitude des mathématiques et aboutit à la pratique de la docte ignorance comme un usage de la critique sceptique. à la différence de Nicolas de Cues, Pascal distingue deux infinis, le grand (...) et le petit, qui plongent l’homme dans le désarroi ; l’infiniment petit s’ouvre comme un gouffre et suscite une horreur que ne ressentait pas le Cusain. Les mathématiques qui, pour lui, illustraient la puissance de la coïncidence des opposés, font découvrir chez Pascal qu’une notion comme le zéro s’insère entre les deux infinis et semble ménager une nouvelle place pour l’homme, celle de l’entre-deux. La docte ignorance devient alors une arme dirigée contre « ceux de l’entre deux » qui n’ont pas emprunté le chemin vers Dieu. Elle est une sagesse du bon usage de la science.Montaigne et Pascal représentent deux étapes sur le chemin de la modernité ; ils sont en route vers l’autonomie du sujet de la connaissance, alors que Nicolas de Cues est encore pris dans la perspective théocentrique du savoir, à la recherche de la perfection de soi. An important step in In Pierre Bayle’s defense of religious tolerance is to refute St Augustine’s claim that heretics who refuse to convert to the true faith do so out of ill will. This claim legitimizes, for Augustine and his followers, the application of temporal sanctions to those heretics, in order to offset their wicked inclination and restore their free will. To counter this view, Bayle uses the theological notions of invincible ignorance and dutiful erroneous conscience, elaborated during the Middle (...) Ages. However, these notions had a very restricted scope, which needed to be extended to so-called heretical beliefs. I show how two early modern scholastics, the Jesuits Gabriel Vázquez and Rodrigo Arriaga, have prepared this evolution and have paved the way for Bayle's denunciation any form of coercion in religious matters. Dans les textes de Machiavel, la question de la guerre est souvent l’horizon même de la question de la politique. La politique et la guerre y sont en permanence mêlées, souvent indissociables ; cela dans les relations que les États établissent entre eux, mais aussi à l’intérieur même des États, des provinces et des cités. Il ne s’agit pas ici de couvrir l’ensemble de ce champ des liens entre la politique et la guerre, tâche impossible à mener dans le cadre (...) d’un article, mais seulement de traiter un des aspects de cette question : il s’agira de voir comment la polémique de Machiavel contre les armes mercenaires et auxiliaires et en faveur des « armes propres » est un des axes structurants de l’ensemble de l’œuvre, un des éléments qui donnent sens aux textes. L’erreur consistant à ne pas avoir compris l’importance des « armes propres » et le rôle déterminant de l’infanterie est un des « péchés des princes » de l’époque des guerres d’Italie ; dans l’écriture des textes de Machiavel on ressent un effort constant pour faire comprendre comment on pourrait racheter, « rédimer » (redimere), ces péchés. C’est cet effort que cet article tente de mettre en évidence. (shrink)

In three experiments we tested hypotheses derived from the goal specificity literature using a real-world physics task. In the balance-scale paradigm participants predict the state of the apparatus based on a configuration of weights at various distances from the fulcrum. Non-specific goals (NSG) have been shown to encourage hypothesis testing, which facilitates rule discovery, whereas specific goals (SG) do not. We showed that this goal specificity effect depends on task difficulty. The NSG strategy led to rule induction among some participants. (...) Among non-discoverers, SG participants were faster and more accurate on difficult problems than NSG participants. The use of misleading exemplars (scale configurations that obscured the rule governing outcomes) led to fixation on inappropriate hypotheses for NSG but not SG participants. When more diagnostic learning exemplars were used, NSG non-discoverers still performed worse than SG participants on difficult problems. SG participants also outperformed NSG participants on a post-test of difficult problems. These findings qualify the generality of goal specificity effects. (shrink)

Not only did André Gorz have a political conception of ecology that links it to history and social struggles, he also proposed a full-fledged ecological alternative at the service of individual autonomy. Though he may have appeared a traitor to his own camp on several occasions, it was always to remain faithful over the long run. His critique of the alienation of labor led him to look for an exit from salaried productivism in the forms of guaranteed income and « (...) cooperation circles » – perhaps as a prelude to the free interchange of the immaterial economy.
